Iga Swiatek admits to being surprised by her own abilities as she remains hungry for titles despite two Grand Slams and more than 10,000 ranking points

World No. 1 Iga Swiatek has not received a single threat at the top of the rankings owing to her consistent performances this season. Ash Barty‘s sudden retirement put Swiatek on the top and she welcomed the opportunity with both hands.
Swiatek leads the World No. 2 Ons Jabeur (4885 points) by 5600 points with her personal tally at 10,485 points. Swiatek is the only player with more than 60 matches won this season with Jabeur in second place having won 46 matches.
“Honestly, I feel really good right now, although it’s true that it’s a little strange. It’s strange because I thought that after so many games I was going to feel a certain lack of motivation, that’s what you think when you win too much, you think you won’t have any more goals to achieve.
“But in reality, the opposite happened, I’m even fresher, and the victory keeps me very positive, so I don’t waste my energy and time getting back into this positive state of mind. I feel like I can continue to show my own pace and do my job on the court,” said Swiatek speaking with the press ahead of her match in San Diego.
Iga Swiatek eyeing her 8th title of the year at the 2022 San Diego Open

Following her win at the 2022 US Open at the expense of Jabeur, Swiatek raced to another final at the 2022 Ostrava Open. She however lost the finals to local girl Barbora Krejcikova who became the first player to defeat Swiatek in a Tour final since 2019.
Swiatek’s loss to Krejcikova was her 8th final of the season. The Pole is back in action however at the 2022 San Diego Open where she starts her campaign against Chinese teen sensation Qinwen Zheng, the only player to win a set off Swiatek at the 2022 French Open.
Swiatek with 7 Tour titles this season leads the Tour for most titles won with Caroline Garcia and Liudmila Samsonova tied for the second spot with 3 titles each. If Swiatek lifts the trophy this week as well, it will be her 8th title of the season.
She is however well short of the most titles won in a season record in the Open Era currently held by Margaret Court who won 21 titles back in 1970. In the 21st century, the record is held by Serena Williams who won 11 titles in the 2013 season ahead of Justine Henin who won 10 titles in 2007.
