Novak Djokovic vs Stefanos Tsitsipas: Preview

Novak Djokovic
Novak Djokovic

Novak Djokovic wasn’t allowed to carry his momentum from last season this year due to his vaccination status. He was denied entry into Australia and hence couldn’t defend his Australian Open title. He missed the tour for over 3 months and started his season in Dubai where he lost in the quarterfinals. He was then forced to miss the Golden Swing for the very same reason. He then played the Monte Carlo Masters where he lost his opening match but bounced back to finish runner-up at the Serbian Open.

At the Madrid Masters, he lost in the semifinal to eventual champion Carlos Alcaraz. This week in Rome, he is yet to drop a set and defeated Aslan Karatsev and Stan Wawrinka in the initial rounds. He then fazed off a stern challenge from Felix Auger Aliassime in the quarterfinals before easing past Casper Ruud in the semifinals to register his 1000th career win.

Stefanos Tsitsipas has had a mixed season so far but he is finally close to his peak form. He made it to the semifinals of the Australian Open before reaching the final of the Rotterdam Open. He also had decent results at Marseille and Acapulco but didn’t perform well in the Golden Swing. He bounced back in the clay season where he defended his Monte Carlo Masters title and made it to the last 8 of the Barcelona Open. He also reached the semifinal of the Madrid Masters where he lost to Alexander Zverev.

This week in Rome, he had to dig deep in most of his matches. He defeated Grigor Dimitrov in the opening round before beating the likes of Karen Khachanov and Jannik Sinner. In the semifinals, he avenged his Madrid loss to Alexander Zverev by beating him in three sets 4-6,6-3,6-3.

Novak Djokovic

This will be the repeat of the 2021 French Open final and expect the same amount of drama this time too. Djokovic looks to have finally found his form while Tsitsipas has shown why he’s one of the best players on clay. The Serb’s serve will be once again the key as Tsitsipas knows how to counter it with his deep baseline shots. Having said that, expect a very tight match with Djokovic winning his maiden title of the season.

Prediction: Djokovic to win in three sets.
