Jannik Sinner registered an emphatic win over Stefanos Tsitsipas in his first match of the 2023 ATP Finals. With this, he is now off to a brilliant start to the tournament and is one step closer to the semifinals.
The Italian has been drafted into the green group of the tournament alongside Stefanos Tsitsipas, Novak Djokovic and Holger Rune. The top two players from each group after the group stages qualify for the semifinals.
The Italian was visibly very excited upon starting his campaign with a win.
I was excited to step on court and opening the finals is really, really special. I knew it was going to be very tough but I think I handled the situation well. I tried to stay aggressive and I am very happy with the performance. I am happy to start off with a win and hopefully I can continue with this intensity.Sinner after the game
He won the match 6-4, 6-4 in straight sets. Although the Greek international tried to give good competition, Jannik Sinner is simply in phenomenal form right now, and he is playing some really good tennis. He recently won the China Masters and the Vienna Open. The Italian would like to continue his winning run in the 2023 ATP Finals as well, which would also give him a boost in the year-end rankings.
It must be noted that the ATP Finals is being hosted by Turin this year and thus Sinner is playing on his home turf. The Italian seemed relaxed throughout his match against Tsitsipas and his straight-sets victory in itself is proof of that.
Jannik Sinner overwhelmed by the support he is receiving in Turin
As mentioned earlier, Sinner is playing the ATP Finals 2023 on his home turf and the crowd is obviously supporting him. The player was overwhelmed by the reception he got from the home crowd during his first match of the tournament and said that he played the match for the fans.
It was beyond what I expected. Two years ago, when I entered the court, I felt a different sensation. Today my wealth of experience is greater. In general, today the crowd was great, they encouraged me even when I lost a point. I didn't just play for myself, but also for the fans.
After Novak Djokovic, Jannik Sinner is the favorite to qualify for the semifinals from the Green Group. The match between him and the Serb in the group stage will be exciting to watch.
