Carlos Alcaraz‘s rise to the pinnacle of men’s tennis is nothing short of meteoric. To ascend the no. 1 spot in men’s tennis before the age of 20 is indicative of a legend in the making. Granted, his top ranking was aided by Rafael Nadal being plagued with injuries and Novak Djokovic being banned from 2 Grand Slam events.

Still, Alcaraz has made his presence amongst more experienced players known through absolute might, and made it clear that he is here to stay. The crown of world no. 1 was placed on Alcaraz’s head after he defeated Norwegian Casper Ruud in the finals of the U.S Open. The finale had put both Ruud and Alcaraz in contention for the top spot, and the latter’s victory also made him the youngest no.1.

Hence, it can be said that the young Spaniard has well earned the respect of his peers. The most recent of his peers to praise him was World no.15 Jannik Sinner who was straightforward in his praise for the current world no. 1. Jannik Sinner recently spoke to Ubitennis, where he shared his experiences from the 2022 tennis season. He admitted that while it was a tough year, it taught him a lot on a mental level.

Alcaraz is the player who impressed me the most because he won two Masters 1000, won a Grand Slam and beat Rafa and Nole in a row on clay. Behind I will place Holger Rune. I played against him in Sofia and I already felt that he was playing very, very well: then he made this leap forward at the end of the season.

“I have to congratulate him because he showed an excellent level of tennis. Then we’ll see how it goes next year,” said Sinner greatly praising his fellow player.

Apart from his impressive performance at the U.S. Open, Alcaraz collected 4 other titles this year, which included 2 Masters 1000 tournaments.

The duo’s last face-off was in the quarterfinals of U.S Open. A tough five-setter ensued, with Alcaraz eventually emerging victorious in 6-3 6-7 6-7 7-5 6-3. Alcaraz had saved a match point against Sinner before forcing and winning the 5th set to make it to his first-ever Grand Slam semi-final in what was a spectacle of a match for the fans.
