John McEnroe lists additions that will make Sebastian Korda a ‘legit threat’ at Wimbledon in coming years
American tennis legend John McEnroe sees a lot of potential in Sebastian Korda while listing some of improvements.
John McEnroe, Sebastian Korda
American former World No. 1 John McEnroe has identified Sebastian Korda as a potential threat at Wimbledon in the coming years citing some of his strengths. According to the American legend, his compatriot is one of the foremost next-gen players on the tour slated to herald the era of transition in tennis.
Korda, no doubt, has been impressive in the past few months. 2023 has been particularly eventful for the 22-year-old. In Adelaide International 1, he reached his first ATP final eventually losing to Novak Djokovic. While in the Australian Open, he made it to the quarterfinals before bowing out due to a wrist injury.
McEnroe believes there are some traits that set Korda apart from his tribe. “I think Korda. I mean, to me, Sebastian Korda is a guy like ‘wow’,” McEnroe said. “If he could put it together, we’ll see how the wrist is, haven’t heard any updates on the wrist injury that he suffered against Khachanov.”
The three-time Wimbledon champion himself, McEnroe sees room for some improvements before SW19 that will further make him a player to beat. “If he can add a little more meat to the bones, get a little more pop on the serve, he looks to me like a guy that’s a legit threat at Wimbledon,” he explained.
John McEnroe expects an American to win a Major very soon
Andy Roddick was the last American to win a Major back in 2003 when he lifted the US Open title. But the seven-time Grand Slam champion remains bullish about the capabilities of the US players. He believes that sooner than later a player from his country take up the opportunity.
“There is a void in tennis with Roger retiring, we are not sure about Rafa so there is a place now that the players are trying to find out where they belong so there is an opportunity,” he said during a recent Eurosport and discovery+ event. Frances Tiafoe is one of the players he thinks to clinch that opportunity.
“Tiafoe I would put him close to the top in terms of upsides because athletically he could be even the best of them all, but mentally he is getting a stronger, disappointing result at the Australian Open. I think in the next year or year and a half I think you will see one of the Americans win a major.”
