American youngster Coco Gauff’s journey in the 2023 Australian Open has come to an unfortunate end. The teenager suffered heartbreak alongside compatriot Jessica Pegula in the doubles game against Shuko Aoyama and Ena Shibahara at Margaret Court Arena. Earlier this week Gauff was knocked out by Latvian Jelena Ostapenko in the singles event.

Gauff was visibly dejected after the bitter ending of her campaign. This is not something that the 2022 French Open finalist had expected going into the tournament. But in the end, Gauff looked hopeful to make a strong comeback. Yes, the result was disheartening but her spirit was not broken.

Gauff owned up to her mistakes during the tournament as she wrote a column for BBC. “For your own mental well-being, you have to remind yourself you will fail and make some silly mistakes. You will make mistakes because you haven’t experienced life enough not to do that. I think that is something that I’m only realizing this year,” she expressed.

Before the start of the tournament, the American teenager was the favorite to win the title in the 2023 Australian Open. Her victory in the ASB Classics in Auckland reinforced her confidence as she prepared to take on the big names in the season’s first Grand Slam. Gauff’s start of the campaign also looked promising.

She knocked out the 2021 US Open champion Emma Raducanu in the second round in straight sets. But moving on in the fourth round she fell short of Latvian Jelena Ostapenko which ended her single’s journey in the tournament. Later in the press conference, Gauff turned emotional and broke down in tears. Despite the disappointment with the result and the tears flowing, she felt good about her performance.

“I think it’s because I worked really hard and I felt really good coming into the tournament and I still feel good. I still feel like I’ve improved a lot,” she said after the loss. Gauff will not take long before she starts roaring back onto the tennis court.
