World No. 22, Matteo Berrettini has not been in form this season. Berrettini has faced rampant online criticism from fans and tennis coaches alike. Comparatively, Berrettini’s 2022 campaign was much more successful. Since winning the Cinch Championships in June last year, Berrettini has been significantly lacking in terms of his career.
And fans have targeted the Italian heartthrob’s romantic life for the lacuna in his game. Subject to criticism since the beginning of 2023, Berrettini recently defended his relationship with Melissa Satta. Berrettini is confused as to how his girlfriend could possibly affect his game. Several personalities such as his coach, Stefano Massari, and former player, Flavia Pennetta have sided with Berrettini.
Tennis experts have been debating Berrettini’s dismal stretch of form throughout the 2023 season frequently. Many have suggested that the Italian’s underwhelming season is a result of his alleged poor work ethic and prioritizing of his relationship. For instance, Nicola Pietrangeli joined the fray to criticize the Italians.
The pair even drew online flak for having a beach vacation in Miami recently. In a recent interview with Eurosport, Berrettini tried focusing on the more positive side, “On the one hand it’s positive because it means that tennis is one of the most popular sports in Italy.” With regards to the claims made online, he continued, “I can not conceive how a relationship can allow you not to do your job, but people talk.”
Furthermore, Berrettini stated that he is quite happy with his relationship at the moment. He dismissed the online hatred, “…it seems to me as if general education has been lost. In the end, however, I am happy, this is what matters.” The 27-year-old will be facing Maxime Cressy in his first match of the ongoing Monte Carlo Masters. Berrettini has also expressed his concern regarding injury woes, “… I have always gone to six thousand…I paid the price for this routine. I’m putting in a lot of work to play as many games as possible.”

Matteo Berrettini had been dating fellow tennis player, Ajla Tomljanović since 2019. The tennis pros sadly ended their relationship in the summer of 2022. However, official confirmation of his relationship with Melisa Satta came in January this year.
The pair was spotted in Milan, fueling dating rumors. With the duo often seen in public, their romance was confirmed. Satta is an Italian TV presenter and model, who is the ex-wife of a soccer player, Kevin-Prince Boateng, with whom she has a child. The Italian lovebirds have been the talk of the town ever since.
