On Saturday (March 31), the Miami Open semifinals will feature a matchup between fourth seed Daniil Medvedev and 14th seed Karen Khachanov. Medvedev, currently ranked World No. 5, advanced to the semifinals after defeating Christopher Eubanks in straight sets (6-3, 7-5). With this victory, Medvedev has improved his season record to a tour-leading 27-3.
Despite reaching the quarterfinals in the last two years, Medvedev has never made it past that stage in the Miami tournament until now. After his third-round defeat to Sebastian Korda at the Australian Open, the 27-year-old has been in excellent form, winning 22 out of his last 23 matches. This impressive streak includes winning titles in Rotterdam, Doha, and Dubai. However, his winning run of 19 matches was brought to an end by Carlos Alcaraz in the Indian Wells final earlier this month.
In the meantime, the 16th-ranked Khachanov is also making a mark in Miami. He defeated last year’s semifinalist Francisco Cerundolo, only conceding five games. This victory has improved his record to 13-5 in 2023 and 6-6 in Miami, where he has never advanced beyond the third round before.
Khachanov had a successful run at the Adelaide International 1 and 2, reaching the quarterfinals, before making it to the semifinals at the Australian Open. However, he suffered a third-round loss at Indian Wells just two weeks ago. He will give his best against the Russian to reach his first Miami Masters finals.

Medvedev holds a 3-1 lead in head-to-head matchups against Khachanov, with his most recent victory being in straight sets during the quarterfinals of this year’s Adelaide International 1. Khachanov’s sole win over his compatriot came five years ago in the Moscow semifinals. As quintessential baseliners, both Medvedev and Khachanov excel on hard courts and often produce their best tennis on this surface.
Their game styles are quite similar, with both players possessing a big serve, powerful groundstrokes on either flank, and excellent movement. However, Medvedev is an outstanding counterpuncher and has also been displaying a growing tendency to win points at the net, making it challenging for his opponents to anticipate his game plan.
Medvedev has dominated their head-to-head matchups, losing only once in their four meetings. He has been playing consistently well throughout the tournament and appears to be in good shape. Medvedev received a walkover in the third round against Alex Molcan, giving him an added advantage over Khachanov in terms of rest.
