As a young player on the tour, one of the things you crave is attention from the senior pros. Even criticism is taken in the right spirit. You feel on cloud nine as soon as some established player says you are playing well.
Something similar is cooking in the tennis world. Young Mirra Andreeva is living her dream life, with legend Andy Murray proud of her game. Andreeva had recently commented on how beautiful the Scot looked. To that, Murray had funnily replied that the Russian needed to get her eyes checked.
In a viral interview from the Madrid Open, one can see Mirra Andreeva absolutely in awe of her idol. A big fan of Murray, all she wanted was appreciation from the Brit. She has always admired him and took her chance to wish him well after he won a challenge event in France. A first tournament win for Murray in four years was a big occasion. Andreeva saw her chance there and texted the Scot.
To her luck, she got a reply from the two-time Olympic gold medalist. “After he won a challenge, I texted him. He actually answered me, so I was really happy about it. Thank you, & good luck in Roland Garros.’ Maybe that’s why I’m playing that good now!” said the Russian.
She is in awe of him to the extent that she has given him credit for her performances. Mira has done well so far this year. With incredible consistency in the ITF tournaments and a quarterfinal appearance in Madrid. She looks ready to challenge the best. Can she maintain a high level over the course of seven weeks? That’s the big question.

Mira Andreeva starts in fine fashion at the Roland Garros 2023

After a consistent run on the Tour, Roland Garros has provided Mirra with a much-needed opportunity. She has the stage set to have a deep run and prove her skills. She had to play the qualifying rounds. However, they didn’t seem to be a problem as she breezed through them. Her main challenge, though, would be in the main draw, however, she looked pretty unbeatable in her first-round encounter.
Beating Alison Riske 6-2, 6-1 in about an hour is a great way to start the event. She now needs to focus on staying healthy, as Grand Slam runs can very quickly derail due to injuries. Her next opponent is Diane Parry. She has come to the second round after beating the 25th seed, Anhelina Kalinina. Andreeva will have to be alert, as this won’t be an easy encounter.
