Musician Phoebe Bridgers leads obscene chants targeted at Margaret Court for her controversial stand on the LGBTQ+ community
American singer and songwriter hurled obscene abuse at the tennis legend during her concert in Margaret Court Arena.
Phoebe Bridgers, Margaret Court
American singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers took a swipe at Margaret Court during her concert in Australia. In an extraordinary lash-out, Bridgers called the Australian tennis great a ‘stupid c**t’ over her controversial anti-LGTQ+ views. The musician was performing in the packed Arena named after the 24-time Grand Slam champion on Wednesday night.
Bridgers did not stop there as she led the crowd in a ‘f**k Margaret Court’ chant. Court, who is now a Christian minister, has voiced her strong reservation about same-sex marriage in Australia. Her ‘homophobic’ views have not sat well with many personalities supporting the cause.
In the charged atmosphere, Bridgers continued to evoke Court’s name leading the chants against her. ‘F**k that stupid-a**, dumba** b**ch. F**k that stupid c**t, change your name,’ she yelled multiple times with the absolute support of the crowd. ‘Who wants to say f**k Margaret Court on three? On three. One, two three, f**k Margaret Court!’ the Grammy-nominated artist kept on.
Margaret Court has come under criticism multiple times for her negative stand on the LGBTQ community
The Australian tennis legend, Margaret Court has come under attack several times for her negative stand on same-sex marriages in her country. Earlier British former World No. 1 Laura Robson criticized the 24-time Grand Slam champion for her past comments against the LGBTQIA+ community during the 2023 Australian Open.
“You know what, I didn’t even remember that. I wore some rainbow hairbands I think it was on Margaret Court Arena obviously after she came out and said some pretty inexcusable things in my opinion,” she said earlier while covering the Australian Open last month.
Some of the former legends have even voiced their support for renaming the Margaret Court Arena. American greats John McEnroe and Martina Navratilova are some of them. They proposed earlier that the Australian Open venue be renamed the ‘Evonne Goolagong Arena’ after the former Australian Aboriginal player.
