Novak Djokovic is set to face Jannik Sinner in his second match of the ongoing ATP Finals 2023. The Serb has already won his first group-stage match of the tournament against Holger Rune and a win against Sinner will almost confirm his position in the semifinals. However, the 24-time Grand Slam winner is up against a strong challenge, as Jannik Sinner, being an Italian, will receive the support of the home crowd as the tournament is being played in Turin. 

The Serb, however, has said that he is in fact looking for a real challenge from Jannik Sinner and thus it is good that he will be receiving all the support from the home crowd. Djokovic is aware of the fact that he has so far been able to maintain a perfect record against the Italians, but he is improving at a rapid pace and things might not be the same this time around.

Novak Djokovic said in an interview ahead of the match:

It’s gonna be a great challenge playing against him obviously in front of his home crowd. He’s gonna have an overwhelming support here from the Italians but I’m looking forward to it, I like the challenge.

The Serb was all praises for Jannik Sinner ahead of their match and he complimented his strengths. He said:

He’s one of the strongest and fastest hitters from the baseline. Both forehand and backhand are lethal. You know, he takes the ball on the rise. He’s difficult to play against on any surface. So far (I’ve) had a perfect record against him but you know, he’s been improving.

Novak Djokovic is currently the favourite to finish as the table-topper of the Green Group 

The Green Group of the 2023 ATP Finals has Novak Djokovic, Holger Rune, Jannik Sinner and Hubert Hurkacz. Top seed Novak Djokovic has already defeated Holger Rune in his first match of the tournament. His next opponent Sinner defeated Stefanos Tsitsipas in his first round. The Greek was later replaced by Hubert Hurkacz in the tournament.

The Serb has a good chance of being the table-topper of the green group if he manages to beat Jannik Sinner in his next match. The two have locked horns against each other three times, and Novak Djokovic won all those matches.

Thus, the Serb is in an advantageous position. His last match against Hubert Hurkacz is expected to be an easy win anyway.
