Serbian tennis prodigy Hamad Medjedovic recently won the 2023 ATP Next Gen Finals. The 113th-ranked player defeated Arthur Fils, who is 77 ranks ahead of him, in a scintillating final match.
Medjedovic has been under the wing of Novak Djokovic from 2021 and the Serb has been supporting the youngster both financially and as a mentor. After his superb display in the Next Gen Finals, Medjedovic has been invited by the 24-time Grand Slam winner for joint sessions ahead of the 2024 United Cup and the Australian Open.
We received an invitation from Novak and his team to be together for the preparations. We are in Dubai until the end of December, and then from there we will go together to the United Cup in Perth.Viktor Troicki, Medjedovic’s coach via sportklub
The United Cup is an international mixed-gender hard-court tournament where matches are played between international teams. It is the only mixed-gender tournament where both ATP and WTA award points to their players and the maximum points that a player can score is 500.
Thus, Troicki said that Medjedovic will be Serbia’s second player in the United Cup because of Novak Djokovic and that the Australian Open will be his first tournament of the season. He added:
Of course, Novak will play singles, Hamad will be there as the second player, and I'm sure that all that time spent with Novak will mean a lot to him. The first tournament he will play in is the Australian Open.
Hamad Medjedovic says he is happy to follow in Novak Djokovic’s footsteps
Djokovic identified the potential in Hamad Medjedovic in 2021 when he was still playing amateur tennis and decided to help him financially and with his guidance. The Serb is just doing this because he wants to do something for people who deserve it and wants Hamad to do it for a deserving player too some day when he is successful himself.
The youngster has always been grateful to Djokovic for his role in his career. After winning the 2023 ATP Next Gen Finals, Hamad said he was glad to be following the footsteps of his idol.
Two of us from Serbia. He won the big Masters, the real one, and I won the Next Gen. Obviously it's a huge thing and I'm happy to follow in his footsteps in some way.
Hamad Medjedovic finished the 2023 season as the 113th-ranked player in the world. Thus, he will have to play the Qualifiers in the 2023 Australian Open.
