For what could have been a dream ending to an already perfect season on Tour this year for Novak Djokovic, his failure at the important Davis Cup will surely be a haunting and traumatic one, as he lost the chance to take Serbia all the way to winning the Cup.
The 24-year-old Grand Slam title winner has time and again stressed his interest and priority in leading his country to a Davis Cup victory, but he and his team were stopped by the formidable Italians, led by Jannik Sinner, who showed an impressive performance both in the singles and the doubles categories to snatch the victory away from Team Serbia.
On being asked if the World No. 1 would return in the next edition of the Davis Cup in 2024, the Serbian replied:
I don't know, it's always my greatest pleasure and honor to play for my country. Next year is far away, the head is hot.
Novak Djokovic had an incredible year this season on tour. The Nole featured in the finals of all four majors of the year and won three of them. To make things even better for him, he went on to win the Paris Masters and the ATP Finals as well. Nole also secured his position as World No. 1 as he ended the year on top for the 8th time in his career.
The seven-time Wimbledon champion praised Sinner and his efforts to take Italy all the way. He also admitted that he was to blame for Serbia’s loss as he did not convert the three match points he had in his singles clash with Jannik Sinner. Talking about his defeat, Nole added:
One ball was missing, that ball was mine and I have to take responsibility. I'm a tragic person, what should I do.
