Aryna Sabalenka, the latest Australian Open champion, won the tournament against 2022 Wimbledon winner, Elena Rybakina. Sabalenka won the finals match in three intense sets, but finally defeated the Kazakhstani player, 4-6, 6-3, 6-4. The fifth seed, now second in the world rankings, won the major in her maiden final too.
Rybakina, the defending Wimbledon champion, appeared to have the upper hand after winning the first set, but Sabalenka outplayed her in the second set and eventually clawed her way to victory in the decider despite blowing three match points. The Belarusian is the first ever ‘neutral’ player to win a singles major tournament following Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.
Ons Jabeur, the current no.3, cheekily took credit for Sabalenka’s win. Jabeur tweeted that the champion’s practice sessions were one of the reasons she won. Jabeur also said that ‘at least she likes to think that’ regarding their sessions together. Sabalenka has replaced the Tunisian star in the rankings.
Fans reacted to Jabeur’s cheeky remark on Twitter and appreciated her sense of humour on the social media platform. They also encouraged her to win a title herself.
Jabeur, on the other hand, suffered an early exit at Melbourne Park after falling to Marketa Vondrousova in the second round in three sets. The Australian Open will end on Sunday, with the concluding men’s final between Novak Djokovic and Stefanos Tsitsipas.

Paula Badosa congratulates Sabalenka on her win
Paula Badosa, the Spanish No.11, and Sabalenka’s friend, congratulated the latter on her maiden win. Sabalenka finally won a Grand Slam after losses in three semi-finals. Badosa went on Twitter to express love for her friend’s win. Amazingly, Sabalenka’s win-loss record in 2023 is 11-0 too and she has also won an ATP title this year.
The Spaniard herself resigned from the tournament due to an injury. After going through many hardships and some thought luck, Aryna Sabalenka finally won a major, shedding a few tears and rejoicing after winning the match.
