Patrick Mouratoglou details the generation of Daniil Medvedev and Stefanos Tsitsipas as “unlucky” in defeating the Big 3

The former World No 1 Daniil Medvedev had a disappointing exit at the 2022 ATP Finals as he lost all his Group matches in 3-setter. On the contrary, he is the only player from the current generation to win a Grand Slam title apart from the Big 3 in the past decade which came at the 2021 US Open. Patrick Mouratoglou makes a huge confession about the current generation of players and their success rate at the major tournaments against the Big 2.
Despite being considered one of the strong contenders to dethrone the Big 3, Daniil Medvedev hasn’t had much success against them. He lost to Rafael Nadal in the finals of the Australian Open and lost against Novak Djokovic in the group stage of the Year-end championship. Not to forget, he was the finalist in the previous three editions of the Year-end Championship, but failed to win a single match.
The French tennis coach reveals that players like Stefanos Tsitsipas, Andrey Rublev, and Daniil Medvedev are the ones who often face either the Mallorcan or the Serbian at most of the tournaments. He also stated that it is one of the reasons why they haven’t had much success, especially in the Grand Slams, and has affected their confidence level. But was quick to admit that Nadal, Djokovic, and Roger Federer are yet to be dethroned in the past two decades.
Mouratoglou said, “The generation of Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Rublev, etc was unlucky because they had to face the great Rafa and the great Novak and they lost a lot against them which damaged their confidence. The younger generation, Holger and Alcaraz, so far haven’t had to deal with that, so they still have that belief that they can do anything, which is their strength. No generation has ever succeeded in dethroning Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic, none. They are the three greatest of all time.“
Patrick Mouratoglou compares the generation of Daniil Medvedev to the younger generation
Patrick Mouratoglou went on to compare the two upcoming generations of players of the sport. He admitted that the generation involved with Daniil Medvedev, Tsitsipas, etc who are the 90s born will face the most competition from the young generation of players.
However, he claimed that the Big 2 are not as consistent as in their prime time and soon, their dominant era will end with the biggest example being Alcaraz who became the youngest year-end World No 1. He further stated that he looks forward to the new era of dominance where two different generations of players will compete at the highest level.
Mouratoglou said that “Today is a very interesting time because they are not as dominant, they are not playing as many tournaments and there is a new generation coming and a second generation coming. The new generation is that of Medvedev, Tsitsipas, Rublev, etc., and the second is that of Holger, Carlos Alcaraz, Felix Auger‐Aliassime, Sinner, etc. It’s two different generations that are going to be competing against each other for many years, trying to win Grand Slams and that makes it super exciting and interesting,”
