22-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal recently revealed his picks for the ongoing FIFA World Cup. The 2022 World Cup in Qatar is the 22nd edition of the football World Cup and it is the first time that a football World Cup is being held in November-December. This is also the first World Cup to be held in the Arab world, and the second World Cup held entirely in Asia.

While many big teams are in for contention, there is no clear outright favorite. According to Nadal, the Argentine team led by Lionel Messi is a very strong candidate to win and teams like Spain, France, Portugal, and Germany will have a slight edge over the others because of the kind of players they have. In the end, Nadal stuck to his home team- Spain, to bring the World Cup home.

“I still think Argentina is a candidate to win it. There are national teams with a little edge over the others: Argentina, Spain, France, Portugal, and Germany. But any team will have a chance. We can’t make predictions. As a Spaniard, I trust in our team,” Nadal said.

However, Argentina and Germany have shockingly lost their opening group-stage matches. Argentina went down 1-2 to Saudi Arabia despite scoring the first goal while Germany too lost 1-2 to Japan despite having a 1-0 lead.

Rafael Nadal started the season slowly but was quick enough to get into top form. He won three consecutive titles including his second Australian Open title where he defeated Daniil Medvedev in one of the best major finals of all time. He had a tough start to the clay season but still managed to win the French Open- his record 22nd major title.

Injury scares followed for Nadal as he was forced to withdraw before the Wimbledon semifinals. He then lost in the Round of 16 of the US Open but had a terrible end to his season where he bowed out of the group stage of the ATP Finals.
