Roger Federer admits he is ‘sad’ for not getting the chance to play Carlos Alcaraz as he prepares for his farewell

Former World No. 1, Roger Federer, is undergoing preparations for his farewell match at the upcoming 2022 Laver Cup. Federer will draw the curtain on his successful career of 24 years after his match at the 3-day event which begins on 23rd September in the O2 Arena in London.
Having been absent from the Tour since last year’s Wimbledon, Federer talked about missing out on the chance to play current World No. 1 Carlos Alcaraz during his recent press conference at the Laver Cup ahead of his match scheduled on Day 1 of the tournament.
“I’m sad for not having a chance to play Alcaraz. Loved the US Open. Practiced with him once at Wimbledon when he was playing juniors and he did well. Then I was even more excited to practice with Ferrero, who didn’t miss a ball,” said Federer during the press conference.
Roger Federer and Carlos Alcaraz were together in only 2 tournaments
With Alcaraz already registering wins over Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal in his very small career, fans would have certainly loved an encounter between Federer and Alcaraz. The young gun recently became the new World No. 1 after winning the US Open, a title that Federer won for 5 consecutive years.
Alcaraz and Federer played in only two events together, the 2021 French Open and the 2021 Wimbledon. At the French Open, Alcaraz lost in the third round while Federer withdrew from the tournament prior to his 4th round match. At Wimbledon, Alcaraz lost in the second round while Federer made it to the last-8.
Alcaraz had also expressed regret over not getting the chance to play Federer upon hearing the Swiss maestro’s retirement news. With Federer and Alcaraz both brilliant players on hardcourts, it would have truly been a great match what could have certainly been a change of guard as Alcaraz continues to rise on the Tour.
Alcaraz despite being the World No. 1 missed out on this year’s Laver Cup as the Big-4 confirmed their places followed by Stefanos Tsitsipas and Casper Ruud. Alcaraz’s absence could eventually turn out to be a big boost for Team World which comprises young players who could give the legends a tough time out on the court.
