During his post-knee surgery break, Roger Federer‘s confidential project has taken place. In a new documentary, it was revealed that an unknown portrait of the 41-year-old was shown in a five-month exhibition. None of the people around could recognize it was Federer. The former world No.1 strips down to his boxers for the unique “flying” sculpture as part of Ugo Rondinone’s “burn shine fly” installation at the 2022 Venice Biennale.

Later, Federer himself revealed that he felt vulnerable at that moment as this was something new to him. The Swiss master has retired last year after the Laver Cup from professional tennis. He has 20 Grand Slam titles to his name in his career and over 100 ATP tour titles.

The portrait of Roger shows how he was transformed into a flying figure – ‘cloud six’ – for renowned Swiss artist Rondinone’s exhibition in the Scuola Grande San Giovanni Evangelista church. What’s surprising to the fans is the fact that Roger did all of this when he was battling a knee injury.

Roger never had such an experience before in his life. He did so to help Rondinone to be able to figure out the pose and dimensions for his sculpture. Speaking about the experience in his documentary, the Swiss said “Ugo said okay let’s hold on a second here, let’s really explain to Roger what we’re getting into. Of course you feel vulnerable.”

Roger had to wear a swimming cap and hang horizontally on the strips. And the camera clicks photos from all angles. This is to have an early estimation of what the sculpture will look like once it completes.

Roger Federer transforms into an epic sculpture

Roger draws a comparison with the tennis experience. He says “Okay I’m used to it when I’m on a tennis court but then I’ve got my racket which is like my hammer from Thor and when someone films you then, it’s no problem.”

“But in your underwear, in a harness, hanging there it’s obviously a very different situation and that’s what I think was so unusual for me and even if it’s ridiculous you still think well it’s part of the creative process, this is what it’s going to take to make it a good end result,” he ended.

Rondinone later revealed in the documentary that he had no intention of bringing Roger and making such a sculpture. He also said he denied the idea initially. However, later he changed his mind and decided to do it with Roger Federer. The Swiss later went to see the sculpture himself and said that he can relate to his life away from tennis.
