Aryna Sabalenka is coming off a great run on the hard courts at Cincinnati and US Open, having reached the semifinals at both the tournaments. The World No.5 also reached the fourth round of the Australian Open and the third round at Roland Garros this year, having been made to miss Wimbledon because of her Belarusian nationality.

Meanwhile, Sloane Stephens has had a disappointing year so far and at her home Grand Slam in the US Open, she lost to top seed Iga Swiatek in straight sets. However, Stephens did manage to impress with her Roland Garros performance where she reached the quarterfinals, losing to compatriot Coco Gauff ultimately in straight sets. The American also won a WTA 250 title in Guadalajara, Mexico, in February but apart from that, she has had a pretty ordinary year considering a career-high ranking of No. 3 in the world.

Despite Stephens having the home advantage, Sabalenka is coming into this match on the back of some really good performances, that too on similar hard court surfaces in the US to the one here in San Diego.

Stephens might win a set because she can match Sabalenka with the groundstrokes if she has the desire and the match fitness, especially with the home crowd behind her. However, Sabalenka is overall a much better player as things stand and should be the favorite to win.

Prediction: Sabalenka to win in three sets.
