Coco Gauff had a decent start to the season but picked up the pace during the clay season. She reached her maiden major final at the French Open where she lost to Iga Swiatek. She then reached the semifinals of the Berlin Grass Court Championships before bowing out of the third round at Wimbledon. She then reached back-to-back quarterfinals at Silicon Valley and Toronto and also reached the quarterfinals of the US Open. In the first round of the San Diego Open, she defeated Robin Montgomery in straight sets 6-3,6-3.

Bianca Andreescu returned on the WTA Tour earlier this year during the clay season. She had some good wins with her best result coming at the Italian Open where she made it to the quarterfinals. On grass, she reached the final of the Bad Homburg Open and lost to eventual champion Elena Rybakina in the second round at Wimbledon. She had a very ordinary North-American swing where she managed to reach the third round of the US Open. This week, she defeated Liudmila Samsonova in the first round in three sets 7-6(1),4-6,6-2.

Despite Andreescu having more experience, Gauff will enter the match as the favorite. She is one of the best players of the season and is steadily scaling new heights. She would fancy her chances to go deep into the tournament but Andreescu will not make things easy for her. Although she hasn’t been consistent, the Canadian has shown glimpses of her old form and a win against Gauff would boost her confidence. Expect a very competitive match with Gauff moving into the last 8.
