Stan Wawrinka ignited a discussion within the tennis community about an important matter. He raised concerns about the escalating number of wrist injuries among players. Wawrinka is a renowned Swiss tennis player and a three-time Grand Slam champion. He backed up the statement from Zizou Bergs about players getting wrist injuries. Bergs cited the balls being changed from tournament to tournament as a reason.
Wawrinka’s criticism stemmed from the correlation he observed between the frequent changes in the tennis balls and the increase in the number of wrist injuries. “ I think it’s time to look into carefully at the fact that many players are getting wrist injuries which could, possibly, be prevented by not changing every week of balls…” posted Zizou on his Instagram story, calling out ATP and PTPA. The Swiss reposted this story by agreeing with the Belgian. “ Yup,” posted Stan Wawrinka.
Proponents argued that changing the balls regularly ensured consistent quality and prevented any one brand from gaining an advantage. However, due to the recent injury spikes from various players, they called out the officials to look into the matter. They also wanted to figure out a way that doesn’t injure the players.

Daniil Medvedev and Taylor Fritz also add to the ball-changing injuries claim from Stan Wawrinka
Recently, Swiss tennis sensation Stan Wawrinka echoed Zizou Berg’s words about players getting injured due to regular ball changes. He called out the ATP to look into the issue. Zizou suffered a ligament tear on his left wrist. However, he wasn’t the only player to face difficulties due to frequent ball changes.
“We played with the same balls at Australian Open & I had a terrible feeling with them. I injured my wrist before playing Korda, I thought it was my problem, but I talked to other players & there are more elbow, wrist, & shoulder injuries… I think the balls are responsible.” said Daniil Medvedev back in February, adding to the list of players.
American youngster Taylor Fritz also had a few words to say. “Have been dealing w wrist issues since beginning of USO series cause of ball changes, we went 3 different balls in 3 weeks,” wrote Fritz on X (previously called Twitter). The tennis community eagerly waits for the ATP’s response and the potential measures they might enforce to reduce such risks in the future.
