Tennis veteran Stan Wawrinka will be facing Jannik Sinner in the third round of the ongoing 2023 US Open, and he is pretty worried about it. The Italian professional tennis player has a pretty great record against Stan, and thus, he is slightly worried about the outcome of the match. After winning his second-round match against Argentine Tomás Martín Etcheverry, all he talked about in the press conference was his upcoming match against Jannik Sinner.
“He’s a really tough player to play. He kicked my ass twice already at the beginning of the year. Of course, I’m playing better now. But I saw him play. He’s in full confidence and won his first Masters 1000. It’s going to be a big challenge. I’ll have to play my best tennis to have a chance,” Stan Wawrinka said about Jannik Sinner.
Talking about his second-round match against Etcheverry, Stan Wawrinka took four sets to defeat him after a bit of struggle. The match ended 7-6 (8-6), 6-7 (7-9), 6-3, 6-2 in his favor, thus allowing him to move on to the next round. In the first round, he defeated Japan’s Yoshihito Nishioka in straight sets with no difficulty at all.
Jannik Sinner, on the other hand, has won both rounds so far in straight sets. In the first round, he defeated Germany’s Yannick Hanfmann, while in the second round, he defeated Italy’s Lorenzo Sonego. He is one of the favorites to win the US Open and is the sixth seed in the tournament.

The Italian has won all of their last three encounters, two of which came this season. This season, they first met in the Quarterfinals of Rotterdam and then in the ATP Masters 1000 Indian Wells. Jannik Sinner won both the matches and before that, he had also defeated Stan in the 2022 Wimbledon Open. Stan Wawrinka’s win over Jannik Sinner came before that in the 2019 Antwerp Open and the 2019 US Open.
