Taylor Fritz spoke highly of his girlfriend Morgan Riddle’s influence in increasing the popularity of tennis in the USA. Riddle has gained recognition for sharing captivating behind-the-scenes content from different tennis tournaments while supporting Fritz on tour in furtherance of his career. At the 2023 Miami Open, Taylor Fritz commenced his campaign on a high note with a commanding display against his compatriot Emilio Nava.

Despite a fightback from Nava, Fritz sealed the set with a crucial break point at 5-4. The 10th-ranked player in the world continued his momentum in the second set, securing two consecutive breaks and eventually winning the match 6-4, 6-1. The American also comes in support of Frances Tiafoe‘s proposal to make the sport reach a wider audience.

Speaking after his first win in the tournament, Fritz talked about his girlfriend’s contribution and said, “For sure. It’s always been one of my goals to just see tennis grow and make tennis more popular outside of the casual tennis fan. I wanted tennis to become a more well-known and talked about sport in the U.S. And she’s always known that that’s been one of my goals, and she’s kind of done a really good job of finding this niche of content and, I guess, trying to popularize tennis.”

He further continued and said, “It’s been really great. Impressive as well with what she’s been able to do and generate a lot of hype for tennis. You know, reach people that, I guess, tennis normally wouldn’t reach. I think in our generation it’s much more of a thing. I think that maybe the older generation, they just played, and it was what it was. There’s nothing wrong to just want to play tennis and just have your own life and do what you do.”

During the press conference, Taylor Fritz discussed his improved confidence when entering tournaments without the presence of tennis legends Roger Federer, Rafael Nadal, and Novak Djokovic. He expressed that he now feels more self-assured about his abilities and believes he has an equal opportunity to win tournaments like any other player.

He also lauded his compatriots, Frances Tiafoe and Tommy Paul for expressing their opinions to make changes to the sport. Fritz had been in a good form this year so far. He won the Delray Beach Open and also reached to semis and quarters of two other tournaments. However, he lacked consistency which he will keep an eye on.

The ninth seed is aware of the fact that both Djokovic and Nadal aren’t playing as many tournaments as before. This will be his best opportunity to secure some titles in their absence. He will be facing the 24th seed, Denis Shapovalov later tomorrow in the round of 32 in Miami Open. It will be his first crucial match of the tournament and he will be determined to win.
