American tennis player Taylor Fritz has withdrawn from the Paris Masters after suffering an abdominal injury. The World No. 10 faced Argentina’s Sebastian Baez in the first round of the tournament and got injured after his win. As a result, he will not be able to continue and Daniel Altmaier, who he was supposed to face in the round of 32, has been handed a victory through a walkover.
The most unfortunate part of this forced withdrawal is that it has now put Fritz out of contention to play in the 2023 ATP Finals, which are going to be held in Turin shortly after the end of the 2023 Paris Masters. The American is currently the 10th-ranked player in the world and has a great chance of featuring in the tournament. However, he has now lost that opportunity.
The 26-year-old is clearly heartbroken after having to pull out of the Paris Masters and losing his chance of playing in the ATP Finals.
Devastated to have to pull out with so much on the line. All I wanted was the chance to fight for my potential Turin spot but after getting scans today on my oblique it’s just not possible for me to play. Time to rehab and hope to be back on court as soon as I can be.Taylor Fritz on X
The American ace had won his first match against Sebastian Baez quite convincingly. He defeated the Argentine 6-1, 6-4 in straight sets giving him no chance at all.
Taylor Fritz’s form dropped after the US Open
Fritz has been in great shape and form until the 2023 US Open, where he reached the quarterfinals after a great campaign. He got knocked out by the eventual winner, Novak Djokovic, in the quarterfinal. At that time, he was on the right track to qualify for the ATP Finals. However, after that, things started going wrong.
The American disappointed fans with his performances at the Shanghai Open, the Japan Open, and the Swiss Indoors Basel. As a result, he started going more and more away from the 2023 ATP Finals and has now totally lost his shot.
Novak Djokovic, Carlos Alcaraz, Daniil Medvedev, Jannik Sinner, and Andrey Rublev were already in the ATP Finals. With Taylor Fritz out of the equation, Stefanos Tsitsipas, Alexander Zverev, and Holger Rune have occupied the other three spots.
