American No. 1 Taylor Fritz is enjoying life on the Tour as he breaks into the Top 10 for the first time. With his title at the ATP-500 event in Japan, Fritz completed the Tour set of ATP-250, ATP-500 and ATP-1000 titles. Only the ATP Finals and a Grand Slam title elude the American.
Fritz was an instrumental part of Team World that won the 2022 Laver Cup, the first title for the Team. With Roger Federer retiring at the Laver Cup, Team World also made a mark of their own. However, following Federer and Rafael Nadal‘s double defeat to Frances Tiafoe and Jack Sock, the American pair was abused massively on social media.
Regarding the experience at the Laver Cup, Fritz was happy to have helped win the title but expressed his frustration. “But I was pretty upset to see how much hate Frances and Jack got for winning the match and Frances got for hitting Roger or hitting the ball at Rafa at net. This is not an exhibition.
“We are playing for a lot and for a lot of money. It bothered me a lot because I know Roger would have absolutely hated it if they just gave it to him,” said Fritz as reported by Christopher Clarey writing for The New York Times.
Taylor Fritz admits to crying watching Roger Federer’s emotional retirement ceremony
Federer Nadal‘s duel with Tiafoe and Sock was the final match on Day 1 of the 3-day event. Irrespective of the result, Federer had decided to step away from the game professionally and an emotional farewell ceremony was held to pay a fitting tribute to one of the sport’s finest ever.
With Federer and Nadal both sobbing throughout the ceremony, it was a very emotional affair for all tennis fans not only in the O2 Arena but globally. Watching Federer so emotional, even Fritz couldn’t hold back his tears and revealed, “I definitely cried a lot more than I thought I was going to.”
With the season about to come to an end, Fritz will look to make a big finish as he is well in the race to qualify for the 2022 ATP Finals where three players are yet to be confirmed. Fritz is yet to make a debut at the Year-End Championships and will hope to seize the opportunity this year having played brilliant throughout the season.
