Ever since Roger Federer announced his decision to retire after the 2022 Laver Cup, tributes have been pouring in for the Swiss maestro. Federer retires after 24 glorious years on the Tour and takes home 20 Grand Slam titles and a total of 103 career titles, the second largest trophy cabinet for a man in the Open Era.

With the 2022 Laver Cup already being special as it promised the reunion of Big-4 for the very first time, it becomes extra special as it will mark the end of Federer’s career in a tournament that was the brainchild of Federer himself as he is one of the co-founders of the 3-day event.

“I was lucky to get to compete against Roger Federer in some of the biggest matches,”: Andy Murray

One of the Big-4 members is Andy Murray, winner of 3 Grand Slam titles and a former World No. 1 who will make his debut at Laver Cup this year. Murray recently played for Team Britain at the 2022 Davis Cup in an unsuccessful campaign as they fail to make the quarter-finals.

Speaking about Federer‘s retirement news and the reunion next week in the O2 Arena in London, Murray paid tribute to the retiring Swiss with whom he shared a good rivalry and also famously beat him in the Gold Medal match at the 2012 London Olympics avenging his loss to Federer in Wimbledon finals that year.

“I don’t know how much he will be able to play. I haven’t spoken to him about that. Maybe I’ll get the opportunity to share a court with him in doubles or something like that. That would be really special. Obviously he was an amazing player.

“I was lucky to get to compete against him in some of the biggest matches, in the biggest tournaments, on the biggest stages in our sport. At the time I probably didn’t appreciate it as much but now, looking back, it’s pretty amazing. It’s incredible what he achieved and also what Rafa and Novak have done, as well.

“It’s a sad, sad day for the sport. Unbelievable career, the longevity that he’s had. What he did in the Australian Open when he came back from the knee surgery and stuff was incredible. The way that he played the game, conducted himself and all of those things, I think all of the players respected him for that.

“I’ll speak more on it I’m sure in the coming week with the Laver Cup,” said Murray speaking at a press conference after Team Britain’s exit was confirmed after they lost to both USA and the Netherlands in the group stage matches which makes their upcoming tie against Kazakhstan a dead rubber.
