Chris Evert and Big-3

Former world No.1, Chris Evert is unhappy with Patrick’s comparison of the Big-3 with the NextGen players and disagrees with him. Patrick retweets on Twitter to a fan’s comment that talks about the decrease in popularity of men’s singles in tennis. Men’s singles is experiencing a major shift in the generation of players currently. For over two decades, the tennis world has seen only three players dominate the sport and this is huge in terms of longevity in any sport. Fans got used to it over the years seeing these three win most of the titles across the calendar.

However, with Roger Federer retiring from the professional sport and Rafael Nadal battling injuries regularly, Novak Djokovic is the only one left from the Big-3 fit and running for the titles. Fans started feeling that this led to a drop in the popularity of the sport, especially in men’s singles. The NextGen not being consistent enough to give competition to Rafa or Nole. Most of the finals played by these two are one-sided and hence became less interesting.

Patrick replies to a fan on Twitter and writes saying “Give the next Gen some time. The big 3 haven’t been loved from day 1.” However, Chris Evert disagrees with his comparison and replies to him and says “Wow, that’s a little negative! Think more positive; they’re rebuilding, lots of talent out there, Americans doing great, Novak priming to be the greatest of all time…”

Is 2023 the end of Big-3 in men’s tennis?

The Swiss legend, Roger Federer retired from tennis in 2022. Although Rafa had a good 2022 season as he won two Grand Slam titles. He was injured towards the end of the year. The Spaniard came into the Australian Open as the defending champion but got eliminated in the second round itself. He is been struggling with injuries for some time now and it looks like he will end his career soon.

With two of the Big-3 players not playing, it’s only Nole who is still competing at the top level with the NextGen. He unlike Rafa is still in his prime form and won the Australian Open pretty easily even with a hamstring injury. All in all, the era of Big-3 has ended and that fans now have new players to look out for.
