“The people want to see me, not you!” Nick Kyrgios demands Stefanos Tsitsipas be defaulted for hitting a spectator, recalls Novak Djokovic’s infamous US Open default
Nick Kyrgios
Australian showman Nick Kyrgios got into a nasty fight with the chair umpire, Damien Dumusois during his third-round match at Wimbledon 2022 against Stefanos Tsitsipas. Kyrgios was already unhappy with the umpire for not replacing the lines judge during the first set for a wrong call and even got into an argument during the changeover. Due to a lapse in concentration, Kyrgios lost the first set in the tie-breaker but soon normalcy was restored in the second set, not for too long.
Both players were on serve in the second set too and it looked like this set too was going to go into a tie-breaker. But 5-4 up on Tsitsipas’ serve, Kyrgios took a late break of serve and won the second set 6-4 to level things up. Tsitsipas was very furious with himself for giving two easy points to the Australian and in frustration, smashed the ball into the crowd. The ball, unfortunately, nudged a spectator after which Kyrgios went wild.
He demanded that Tsitsipas should be defaulted for his actions as he has hit a spectator and according to rules, he should be defaulted. He argued with the umpire about the same and even cited Novak Djokovic’s infamous default at the 2020 US Open. He argued both situations are the same and hence Tsitsipas needs to be defaulted.
But the umpire let Tsitsipas go with a code violation. Even the tournament supervisor explained Kyrgios the whole situation but he was adamant that he isn’t wrong here. He then refused to play and called for more supervisors as he wanted to go ‘deep’ into the whole matter. “Give me all the Supervisors. I’m not playing until we get to the bottom of it,” he said.
Nick Kyrgios publicly hurls out insults toward the chair umpire
Even after the whole thing ended, Kyrgios kept pestering the umpire that Tsitsipas should be defaulted according to the rules. And for a change, Kyrgios was right for saying that Tsitsipas indeed hit a spectator in frustration.
He later lashed out at the chair umpire and said that he needs to make better decision and said that the crowd is here to see him. “The people want to see me, not you!” he said to the umpire.
He added that after today’s press conference, the tournament will get s**t. “The amount of shit the tournament is going to get after this press conference,” Kyrgios told Dumusois. He still didn’t believe Tsitsipas didn’t get defaulted for that. “If I do that… OMG,” he shouts later.
