Carlos Alcaraz has been the breakout player of the season and has risen up the ranks massively. He has already qualified for the ATP Finals and is in line to become the youngest World No.1. He started the season by winning his maiden ATP 500 title at Rio and then won his maiden Masters title at Miami. On clay, he won the Barcelona Open and the Madrid Open but bowed out of the quarterfinal of the French Open. He then reached back-to-back finals at Hamburg and Umag but didn’t have the best North American hard court swing in lead up to the US Open.

This fortnight in NYC, he defeated the likes of Sebastian Baez, Federico Coria, Jenson Brooksby, and Marin Cilic before beating Jannik Sinner in the quarterfinal in a five set thriller.

Frances Tiafoe has been rising up the ranks over the last two years but has finally delivered in patches this year. He made it to the Round of 16 of the Miami Masters and on clay, reached his maiden tour final of the season in Estoril. He then made it to the Round of 16 at Wimbledon where he lost to David Goffin in five sets. In Atlanta, he reached the semifinals and backed it up by reaching the quarterfinal of the Citi Open.

At the US Open, he defeated Marcos Giron and Jason Kubler in the first two rounds and then defeated Diego Schwartzman in the third round. He then stunned 22-time grand slam champion Rafael Nadal in the Round of 16 before beating Andrey Rublev in the quarterfinals in straight sets.

This will be the second meeting between the duo. Tiafoe leads the H2H 1-0. They met at Barcelona last year where Tiafoe won in straight sets.
