Coco Gauff and Karolina Muchova will face each other in the semi-finals of the US Open 2023. They will play each other for a spot in the championship round of the tournament. 

The World No. 6 defeated Jelena Ostapenko in dominating fashion in the 4th round, removing her from the competition in straight sets. The 10th-seeded Muchova overcame S. Cirstea 6-0, 6-3 in the 4th round to reach the semis.

Gauff reached her second consecutive quarterfinal of the US Open after overcoming the likes of Mirra Andreeva, Elise Mertens, and Caroline Wozniacki. In the quarterfinals, she faced the 2017 Roland Garros champion, Jelena Ostapenko. Jelena, who had brutally defeated World No. 1, Iga Swiatek, in the 4th round, looked like a major threat to Gauff’s ability to proceed further in the tournament. 

However, Gauff completely managed to subdue the Latvian in ruthless straight sets, 6-0, 6-2, to reach her maiden US Open semi-final. All it took was about 20 minutes for the American teen to grab the opening set against Ostapenko, after which the match was just one-sided in favor of the World No. 6.

Karolina Muchova marched over Storm Hunter, Magdalena Frech, Taylor Townsend, and Wang Xinyu to make it into the quarter-finals where she was up against Sorana Cirstea.

Muchova won the first set, displaying a ferocious performance and not dropping a single game in it. At the start of the second set, she had been broken once by Cirstea, going down 2-0, but turned the entire game around in a matter of a few minutes and went on to win the second set 6-3 to reach her second semi-final of the year.

The two have faced each other only once before, in the finals of the Cincinnati Masters this year, where Gauff emerged victorious, taking the head-to-head tally to 1-0. They played just about a month ago in the finals of Cincinnati, and Karolina Muchova would be looking to get her revenge in this semi-final bout. Both of them advanced into the round of 4 after commanding victories in their quarterfinal matches, respectively. Muchova also lost to Iga in the finals of the French Open this year.

Coco defended extremely well in her match against Ostapenko, which forced the Latvian to make a number of unforced errors. Muchova, on the other hand, has also lost only one set in the entire tournament. The round of 4 clash will be equally tough for both of the players, but Coco’s performance this season and the home crowd advantage will surely help her overcome this battle to secure a place in the championship round.
