Swiss legend Roger Federer played his final doubles match at the 2022 Laver Cup and his farewell night remains to be one of the saddest days in the history of tennis. His sudden retirement was a shocker for many since he hadn’t been playing since Wimbledon 2021. Despite claims of having no plans of making any return to the competitive world, he was seen during one of his practice sessions in New York.
The retired tennis legend is regarded as one of the best athletes in the world. His journey from a ball boy to one of the legends of the sport is one of the best examples of hard work and has left people inspired by his grace and calm demeanor. He retired with 103 ATP titles, the second most in the history of tennis, including 20 Grand Slam titles in his career of 24 years.
He had penned down a heartfelt note to announce his retirement and admitted to having no regrets about the decision. He was spotted during a light practices session at the John McEnroe stadium in New York pulling off some amazing shots. This sparked rumors about the chances of a probable comeback but he had earlier refuted any such claims.
He had admitted to playing the role of a coach motivated by Stefan Edberg but stated that it was not in his immediate plans. Post his retirement, Roger Federer attended an event organized by his sponsor Uniqlo where he enjoyed an exhibition match with the Japanese star Kei Nishikori.
Roger Federer fears playing any other sport due to his knee injury despite being retired
The 8-time Wimbledon champion is in his third month of retirement from tennis. The 20-time Grand Slam winner was forced to take early retirement as his knees continued to be his Achilles heel and with his increasing age, it was a forced move for him. His recovery and rehabilitation did not go as planned and therefore had denied playing any singles match at the Laver Cup. He is the highest-paid tennis player despite being retired and has not played a single Tour match in 2022.
Keeping in mind his health, Roger Federer admitted to having fears of playing any kind of sport as he was asked about his physical body. He admitted that in the past his tour life was so stressful but now he can enjoy his life post-retirement. He claimed that despite being retired, he is fearful of taking any chances with his knee.
His numerous accolades and achievements need no introduction with a lot of collaborations with leading brands. Federer had designed a Mercedes-Benz car and it was auctioned for a hefty six-digit price by Sotheby’s. As part of the “Neon Legacy” project, the money from the auction would be utilized in renovating public tennis courts across the city. The special car was in the color neon taking inspiration from the tennis ball and it also carried the initials of the former World No 1.
