WATCH: Serena Williams practices on the grass for the first time ahead of her much-anticipated Wimbledon return
Serena Williams
Serena Williams announced her return to the tour a few days ago after taking a wildcard to play the 2022 Wimbledon Championships. It was a surprise for a lot of fans as she hadn’t shown any signs of a comeback for almost a year. Serena got herself injured last year in the first round at Wimbledon and has been out of action ever since then.
The American legend didn’t take the court much this year for practice and spent quality time with her daughter and husband. She even hinted that she won’t announce her retirement but rather just stop playing. So many assumed that Serena had decided to bid farewell to the sport. But a few days back, she took to social media to announce her much-anticipated return to Wimbledon.
Ahead of playing at SW19, Serena will play doubles next week at Eastbourne. She will partner with Ons Jabeur and it will be her first match in almost a year. Earlier today, Serena was seen practicing on the grass for the first time this week. She shared a video of her serving on grass and she looks as motivated as ever.
Can Serena Williams equal Margaret Court’s record?
Serena has won 23 grand slam titles and is just one major away from Margaret Court’s all-time record of 24 major titles. She has been chasing a 24th major for the last few years but despite playing multiple finals, she hasn’t been able to cross the finishing line. The 2022 Wimbledon Championships might be Serena’s best and last chance to gun for a major title as age is not on her side.
Grass is the only surface where she can be competitive without having a burnout and hence, she will fancy her chances to notch up a couple of good wins and go all the way. If she manages to do that, it will go down as one of the greatest sporting feats of all time.
