Argentina’s Tomas Martin Etcheverry, who, prior to the French Open, had clinched just one win at a Grand Slam (in the Australian Open last January), has advanced to the quarter-final in the ongoing Roland Garros. After knocking out an injured Yoshihito Nishioka 7-6(10-8), 6-0, 6-1 in the fourth round on Court Suzanne Lengle on Monday (June 5), the 49th-ranked is now the last Argentine left in the tournament after compatriot Francisco Cerundolo fell to Holger Rune.
After Jack Draper withdrew from the first round, Etcheverry defeated the likes of Alex de Minaur, Borna Coric, and Nishioka. Now the 23-year-old will square off against Germany’s Alexander Zverev in his first quarter-final at a Grand Slam on Wednesday (June 7) on Court Philippe-Chatrier. Notably, he is yet to drop a set in the tournament. This year, he has reached the first two ATP Tour finals, one at the Chile Open and the other at U.S Men’s Clay Court Championships in Houston. His win over Yoshihito Nishioka helped him improve to 19-12 in 2023.
Etcheverry also revealed he asked for help from his late sister Magali who died of breast cancer at the age of 32 in 2022. “I always ask my sister for strength. She always gives it to me. At a big moment, I said “Magui help me please. It helped me put an ace.”
Etcheverry dedicated his first-round win over Aslan Karastev to his sister last year at the 2022 Tel Aviv Open when he played his first match a few days after the death of his sister. “I am going through a very difficult time personally as a result of my sister’s death, who fought like a lion to the end against cancer. So this win. My dedication is to her, who surely encourages me from heaven,” he had said at that time.
Tomas Martin Etcheverry’s head-to-head record against Alexander Zverev
Tomas Martin Etcheverry is all set to face former world number two Alexander Zverev in the quarterfinal. Zverev is a two-time defending semifinalist. He knocked out Lloyd Harris, Alex Molcan, Frances Tiafoe, and Grigor Dimitrov in the previous rounds. At the same time, he reached his first Roland Garros quarterfinal in six years. He is now 20-14 on the season.
And about their head-to-head record, Etcheverry and Zverev have never met before, so their record stands at 0-0.
