Jessica Pegula has had a good season so far. She started the year with a quarterfinal outing at the Australian Open where she lost to eventual champion Ash Barty. She then followed it up with a Round of 16 outing at Doha and Dubai before bowing out in her first match at Indian Wells. But she bounced back strongly at Miami where she made it to the semifinal, losing to Iga Swiatek.

This week in Madrid, she defeated Camila Giorgi in the first round before easing past the likes of Kaia Kanepi and Bianca Andreescu. She then defeated Sara Sorribes Tormo in the quarterfinal and followed it up with a semifinal victory over Jil Teichmann in straight sets 6-3,6-4.

As for Ons Jabeur, she missed the Australian Open due to an injury but has played some good tennis ever since then. She made it to back-to-back quarterfinals at Doha and Dubai but had a very ordinary Golden Swing where she won just two matches. On clay, she made it to the final of the Charleston Open and also had a quarterfinal finish in Stuttgart a week ago.

In Madrid this week, she defeated Jasmine Paolini and Varvara Gracheva in the early rounds before getting the better of Belinda Bencic in the Round of 16. She blasted past former World No.1 Simona Halep in the quarterfinal and then eased past Ekaterina Alexandrova in the semifinals in straight sets 6-2,6-3.
