Venus Williams opens up about the mental health struggles of athletes
Venus Williams recently joined hands with ‘BetterHelp’, an initiative that helps in making professional therapy affordable and accessible. The former world number 1 opened up about the importance of speaking up about one’s mental health issues. Venus also credited her mother for pushing her to be more open about the same.
Williams said, “We’re supposed to be indestructible, undefeatable, super strength, almost like superheroes. But for athletes to share their stories of what they’ve gone through really helps people from all walks of life, and that’s so important, My mom always told us that — you have to work on your mental strength. That was her theory of raising kids…you also have to help them mentally be ready and prepared,”
“It’s important to engage in therapy even before you might have something exactly to talk about, to work through and prepare yourself for anything that might come up in your life. You don’t always have to wait until you have issues,” Williams added further in an interview with People’s magazine.
On collaborating with compatriots Frances Tiafoe and Taylor Fritz, Venus said, “This year, we’re coming back in a bigger and better way, I’m so excited to be a part of that and to literally give away opportunities for people to work on and improve their mental health.“
Venus Williams believes that it was her mother who helped her be more vocal about her mental health issues. With BetterHelp, she can give back to the community and shed some more light on this topic which has been neglected for far too long.
