“It seems a bit selfish to me” Rafael Nadal takes a dig at people who refuse to get vaccinated
Rafael Nadal
20-time Grand Slam champion Rafael Nadal is currently recovering from his injury that he picked up at the 2021 French Open and despite his best attempts to continue playing, he could manage only 1 more tournament after his appearance at the Roland Garros and eventually announced his season has ended as he needs to look after his body.
While he continues to recover, Nadal has been a strong advocate of getting vaccinated for the Covid-19 in order to look after the well-being of everyone and be safe at the same time. With athletes being the ones spending time in bio-bubbles, Nadal knows the mental challenge of being in a bubble and hopes that the Pandemic ends soon and the world gets back to normalcy.
Speaking in a recent interview with Marca, Nadal said, “I understand that there are people who do not want to be vaccinated, but it seems a bit selfish to me. We have suffered a lot. We do not know 100 percent the effects of vaccines, but we do have to trust the doctors… we do know the effect of the virus if we are not vaccinated.”
“It seems that today we [Spain] are the country that is least affected by the virus and I think it is because we have a large part of the population vaccinated,” added Nadal further on the vaccination status of Spain and how it has helped more and more people to remain safe amidst the Pandemic that has now been there for nearly 2 years.
Rafael Nadal will be in Melbourne for the 2022 Australian Open
With long discussions surrounding the 2022 Australian Open regarding whether the players without vaccine should be allowed or not, Nadal has made it clear that he has been vaccinated and plans on playing at the first Grand Slam of the next season. The 2009 Australian Open champion might possibly be the only member of the Big-3 playing in Melbourne next year.
With Novak Djokovic refusing to comment on his vaccination status and his views of not taking the vaccines, the 9-time champion in Melbourne might not be allowed to play this year. As for Roger Federer, the 6-time Australian Open champion might not recover in time to make his trip to Australia next year as per his coach Ivan Ljubicic.
