“Olympics behind closed doors would be less special” – Rafael Nadal wants Tokyo Olympics to be delayed

Spanish tennis ace Rafael Nadal made his thoughts known on what he feels about the upcoming Tokyo Olympics as he stated that he hopes the Games get delayed by one more year. The 34-year-old stated that same after his win in the Italian Open semi-final against Reilly Opelka were he secured a comfortable 6-4, 6-4 win. Despite the big-serving American delivering 11 aces, Nadal was assured in his performance in trademark fashion.
Meanwhile, the Tokyo Olympics has been the subject of debate for quite some time now as the Japanese government has expressed reservations about conducting it, as the COVID-19 cases continue to surge. A state of emergency has been declared in Tokyo as well as various other cities like Osaka and Hiroshima which looks set to only extend, leading to a state of uncertainty with regard to the Games.
It is noteworthy that fellow tennis stars and Japanese citizens, Kei Nishikori and Naomi Osaka had also made their thoughts known that conducting the Olympics was not right amid the situation. Swiss tennis legend Roger Federer had also expressed his thoughts saying that ‘clarity’ was needed.

Rafael Nadal spoke at a post-match press conference after his win over Opelka and on being asked about the Tokyo Olympic Games, he said, “From a romantic perspective I’d prefer that Olympic Games get delayed by one more year, because as people get vaccinated, the event would welcome the fans. Behind closed doors it would be less special.”
On then being asked about Roland Garros not allowing crowds at night in the first week of the tournament, the Spaniard said, “I prefer playing in the day than at night, without a doubt. But I will accept any decision.”
About his match against Opelka and the upcoming final he said, “I knew it would have been a difficult match. Opelka gives you no rhythm. I am excited. It’s been an amazing week. I will give it all.”
Nadal will face either Novak Djokovic or Lorenzo Sonego in the final of the Italian Open.
