Maria Sakkari reached a career high ranking of 18 earlier this year in May 2021 and has won a maiden WTA Tour Title. Sakkari was last seen playing at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in Japan. The Greek player reached the third round where she was defeated by eventual bronze medallist, Elina Svitolina in a thrilling three set match, 7-5, 3-6, 4-6. She last played in Canada in 2019 where she lost in her first match, the round of 64, against American, Alison Riske in the third set tiebreaker, 6-4, 2-6, 6-7. This year, Sakkari is seeded number 11 in Canada and will be looking to make a better impression this year round.

The young 23 year old, Marie Bouzkova achieved a career high ranking of 46 in August 2020 and is yet to win a WTA Tour title. She was last seen on the tour at the Silicon Valley Classic where she lost in the round of 32 against Ana Konjuh, 5-7, 6-3, 5-7. Bouzkova last played at the Rogers Cup in 2019 where she surpassed everyone’s expectations. She entered the tournament as a qualifier however, she played her way through to the semi-finals. She defeated number 7 seed, Sloane Stephens and was leading by one set in the quarterfinal against number 4 seed, Simona Halep, when Halep retired. In the semi-final, Bouzkova eventually lost to number 8 seed and former world number 1, Serena Williams in a three set match, 6-1, 3-6, 3-6.
