When it comes to the G.O.A.T debate in tennis, one name that stands out is American legend, Serena Williams. She was the face of women’s tennis for more than two decades and has 23 grand slam titles to her name. Her bold and aggressive game style revolutionized women’s tennis as she brought immense power game, that was unheard of in the women’s game.

Recently in a podcast, 5-time grand slam champion Maria Sharapova spoke in length about Serena. The Russian is one of Serena’s greatest rivals and revealed that the American was by far the most intimidating opponent for her. She also recalled that she lost to Monica Seles very badly in her younger days but still, Serena was definitely the toughest and the most consistent rival for her.

“Serena Williams was by far the most intimidating opponent for me. When I was young I lost to Monica Seles 6–0, 6–1, and I really thought I had a good game. I came off the court bawling, I don’t know if I was 16 or 17, and told my dad, who was my coach at the time, that I really thought I played well. I completely collapsed (laughs). But yeah, Serena was definitely the toughest, toughest, and most consistent competitor at her level,” she said.

The Sharapova-Williams rivalry is one of the greatest rivalries in women’s tennis. They have shared the big stage for more than a decade together and have given tennis fans all around the world, a lot to cheer about. But when it comes to results, Serena has been invincible.

The duo has met as many as 22 times on court out of which, Serena has won 20 times. In fact, the Russian won two of her first three meetings against Serena including the historic 2004 Wimbledon Final. But since then, Serena hasn’t lost a match to Sharapova. Their last meeting came at the 2019 US Open where Serena thrashed Shaparova in straight sets. Needless to say, Sharapova truly was intimated by the brilliance of Serena Williams.
