Ajla Tomljanovic and Matteo Berrettini

Matteo Berrettini became the first Italian since 1960 to make it into the semi-finals of the Wimbledon Championships. Berrettini also made it to his 2nd Grand Slam semi-final with the victory and is 1 match away from entering his maiden Grand Slam finals.

Berrettini was up against Canadian youngster Felix Auger-Aliassime in the quarter-finals of the Wimbledon 2021 and went on to defeat him 6-3, 5-7, 7-5, 6-3 in 3 hours and 4 minutes. This was just the 2nd match at the Grand Slam when Matteo dropped a set. He won his 1st round in 4-sets and went on a streak of 3 consecutive straight-set victories before winning the quarter-final in 4-sets.

In a rather funny incident during the last game when Berrettini was serving for the match, on the match point, Berrettini hit an ace and raised his hands in celebration but it was called a ‘let’ by the umpire which forced Matteo to have another go at his match point. Berrettini however went on to win the next point and confirm his qualification for the semis.

Matteo Berrettini’s girlfriend, Ajla Tomljanovic, was in the stands supporting her boyfriend but could not control her smirk on the incident as Felix himself broke a smile on the misery of the Italian. In what was a tight contest, the ending was a rather humorous but surely a special moment for the Italian who looked emotional during his post-match interview on the court.

Berrettini is turning out to be a great player on Grass as he enjoys yet another successful season on the Grass. Berrettini’s 2019 Grass season saw him win the ATP Stuttgart Open 2019 title, reach the semi-finals of the Halle Open 2019 in the next week and then made it till the 4th round of the Wimbledon 2019 to be defeated by eventual runner-up Roger Federer.

The 2021 Grass season has been no different for him. He won the coveted 2021 Queen’s Club title prior to the Wimbledon and now finds himself in the semi-finals of the Grand Slam and has a very good chance to make it till the finals and may go all the way for the title as well.

Matteo Berrettini will be up against Hubert Hurkacz in the semi-finals of the Wimbledon 2021, to be played on 9th July 2021 on the Centre Court.
