Who is Carlos Alcaraz Garfia?

Carlos Alcaraz Garfia

Carlos Alcaraz Garfia, an 18-year-old boy, has raised quite a few eyebrows after showcasing incredible gameplay in the French Open 2021. He has moved into the top 100 ATP rankings after back-to-back impressive performances at the highest level.

Born on May 5, 2003, Alcaraz made his ATP debut at the age of 16. He received a wildcard for the singles main draw. At 17, the young achiever qualified for the main draw of the 2021 Australian Open. On his 18th birthday, Carlos played the biggest match of his career when he faced Rafael Nadal in the second round of the Madrid Open after defeating Adrian Mannarino in the first round which eventually made him the youngest winner in Masters 1000 as a wildcard.

After exhibiting astonishing gameplay in the qualifier stage, Alcaraz defeated his fellow countryman Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the first round of the French Open 2021 by 6-3, 2-6, 6-1, 7-6. Comparisons are being drawn between Alcaraz and Rafael Nadal. Not because there is any similarity in their playing styles, but because Alcaraz is the youngest player to advance this far at a Grand Slam since 17-year-old Nadal achieved the same in the Australian Open back in 2004.

The ATP rank 97 teen is from Spain. The youngster scripted an upset on Thursday by defeating 28th seed Nikoloz Basilashvili 6-4, 6-2, 6-4 in the second round of the French Open 2021.

With this win, Carlos Alcaraz has registered his name in the history book. He is the youngest man to reach the third round in the French Open since 17-year-old Andrei Medvedev achieved this feat back in 1992.

Post his praise-worthy performances, Alcaraz said, “Obviously it’s good, the numbers, but I still focus on me. I am doing the right things, and I want to keep [doing] this. I’m still growing up as a player and as a person, and that’s the important thing.”

The 18-year-old is growing in confidence. After a relatively tough battle against Bernabe Zapata Miralles in the first round of the ongoing Roland Garros, Alcaraz absolutely thrashed Basilashvili in straight sets in the second round of the French Open 2021 by 6-4, 6-2, 6-4.

The World No. 97 teenager from Spain will take on German tennis star Jan-Lennard Struff in the third round of the tournament. Experts opine that Alcaraz might turn out to be the next big thing in the world of tennis.
