On Sunday, Ryan Fox came out on top of The 2026 Open Championship to claim his 1st major title. He finished 1 shot ahead of Cameron Young to clinch a historic victory. How much did he earn from this win?

The 39-year-old had a rough start to the tournament. Following a score of 72, he shot a score of 68 in the second round and made the cut. It was on moving day on Saturday that he made a huge leap.

In the third round, Fox made 9 birdies and 1 bogey to fire a score of 62. He became just the third player this week to shoot 62 after Lucas Herbert and Sam Burns.

He started the final round 2-shots behind Burns and played alongside him as the final pairing. Cameron Young set the pace early with a round of 64. The American was 9-under par when he entered the clubhouse.

While Burns stuttered a bit in the final round, Fox kept his cool. Following a collapse from Kim Si-woo on the back nine, it became a battle between him and Burns to chase down Young.

After a bogey on the 11th hole, Fox made back-to-back birdies on holes 13 and 14. At the 15th hole, he found himself in a bit of trouble as his shot landed in the bunker.

He made a bogey on this hole and bounced back with a birdie on the 16th hole. Following a par on the 17th, he was tied for the lead and needed a birdie to win and a par on the final hole to take the tournament to a playoff round.

He did not need any extra holes. After Burns wrapped up his round with a par, Fox drained a close-range birdie putt to clinch the tournament by 1-shot.

Unlike the other major championships, The Open does not have a prize purse of $20 million or more. This year there is an increase, though.

Last year, Scottie Scheffler took home $3,100,000 from the $17 million purse after a dominating win. This year, the purse was $17,750,000, an increase of $750,000.

So Ryan Fox took home a winning cheque of $3,200,000. This was also just his 3rd win on the PGA Tour.

Ryan Fox made the largest 36-hole comeback to win The Open Championship

When the tournament started, not many predicted Ryan Fox to be the Champion Golfer of the Year. The golfer stunned the world with a historic comeback at The Open to claim his 1st major victory.

In fact, Fox’s comeback is the largest 36-hole comeback in major history to win a men’s major. As per Justin Ray, Fox was T52nd after the first two rounds with scores of 72 and 68.

In the next two rounds, he turned things around. A low score of 62 on Saturday was followed by a round of 68 on Sunday to finish 1-shot ahead of Cameron Young.

He is also just the 2nd golfer from New Zealand to win this event. Sir Bob Charles was the first Kiwi to win The Open in 1963 at the Royal Lytham and St. Annes.
