- Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the clay season, including Roland Garros, due to tenosynovitis.
- Stefanos Tsitsipas' ex-girlfriend, Theodora Petalas, revealed that she suffered from the same injury, which impacted her tennis career.
- Greg Rusedski advised Alcaraz to prioritize his long-term health over a rushed return to competition.
Carlos Alcaraz is not in action because of an injury that he suffered while competing at the Barcelona Open, which forced him to withdraw from his second-round match against Tomas Machac. Alcaraz is dealing with tenosynovitis, due to which he will also be skipping Roland Garros.
Alcaraz won the last two years’ Roland Garros, defeating Alexander Zverev in 2024 and Jannik Sinner last year. Because of the severity of the injury, many believe Alcaraz could also end up skipping Wimbledon, which he won in 2023 and 2024. Stefanos Tsitsipas‘ ex-girlfriend, Theodora Petalas, also dealt with the same injury that Alcaraz suffered, and it eventually marred her career.
Carlos Alcaraz has withdrawn from the clay season, including Roland Garros, due to a wrist injury, which is devastating for all of tennis. Really sad. That’s what I had. Yes. Tenosynovitis, it derailed my tennis career.
Theodora Petalas said during the What’s The Call? podcast
Alcaraz has already played three finals and lifted two titles. After becoming the youngest Career Grand Slam champion by defeating Novak Djokovic in the Australian Open final, the 22-year-old breezed past Arthur Fils in the Qatar Open final.
After his semifinal exit at the Indian Wells Masters and a third-round exit at the Miami Open, the seven-time Major champion failed to defend his Monte-Carlo Masters title, losing to Sinner in straight sets, and this saw him lose his No. 1 ranking to the four-time Grand Slam champion.
Sinner is aiming to clinch back-to-back titles on clay. At the ongoing Madrid Open, he beat Fils 6-2, 6-4 in the semifinals. He is bidding to become the first man to win the first four Masters 1000 of the season.
Because of Alcaraz’s absence at the French Open, Sinner will have to deal with a lot of pressure and expectations as he will be considered the heavy favorite to win the title. The 24-year-old will be bidding to become the seventh man in the Open Era to complete the Career Grand Slam in the clay-court Major and the first since Alcaraz.
Greg Rusedski urged Carlos Alcaraz to look at the bigger picture
Greg Rusedski, like many others, has urged Carlos Alcaraz not to rush his comeback if he has to skip the Wimbledon Championships. The Brit cited the example of Juan Martin del Potro, whose career was marred by chronic wrist injury.

It just depends on what the conditions are going to be like in summer. If it’s hot, the ball goes through the air quickly. If it’s going to be a little cooler, it goes a little slower. So Carlos will only come back when he’s 100 % fit and ready to go. He needs to look at the bigger picture… He has a long career ahead of him, and he can’t afford to have a wrist problem now that could affect him as it did a player like Juan Martin del Potro, who was never the same after he had a wrist problem.
Greg Rusedski said on the Off Court with Greg podcast
Alcaraz recently spotted watching his brother, Jaime Alcaraz, make his under-16 Madrid Open debut. The World No.2 skipped the Madrid Open for the second consecutive time because last year, as well, an injury forced him to skip the fourth Masters 1000 of the season.
Last year on the clay swing, apart from his titles in Monte Carlo and Paris, Alcaraz also lifted the Italian Open by defeating Jannik Sinner. In last year’s French Open, Alcaraz came from two sets down and saved three match points to defend his title.
