Mercedes’ recent upturn in performance has enabled the team to gain some control over their position in the championship standings. However, Lewis Hamilton was unable to fight for the podium after woeful performances at the Italian GP. As a result, the Briton ranted throughout the post-race session. Toto Wolff has voiced his thoughts over the seven-time world champions’ verdict.
Toto Wolff sided with Lewis Hamilton despite the latter’s rants over the slump in performance. Wolff believed that this was a great characteristic of a champion to introspect. The Austrian felt that Hamilton was trying to do the same and look over his mistakes and improve down the season. The 2024 campaign still has multiple races remaining for the Briton to manage a late-season comeback and finish better in the table.
I think the great characteristic of a champion is to first look at himself and say, What did I do wrong? And I think that's what he's doing.Toto Wolff told GPblog
Hamilton is often seen being critical of his errors and blunders during a race. Hence, the Italian GP was just another showcase of Hamilton being accountable for his shortcomings. Wolff further noted that Hamilton was trying to find grey areas where he could improve and do better to not lose performance during races.
He's trying to find where he can improve, what he could have done better and where he's lost their performance.Toto Wolff added
Lewis Hamilton claimed Mercedes got ‘slower’ over the Italian GP weekend
The Italian GP was just another showcase of an unstable performance from Mercedes. The German carmaker came into the weekend after two consecutive victories. Regardless, Brackley couldn’t keep up with the pace at the front of the field and lost the race. As a result, Hamilton reckoned that the team got slower during the weekend while the other teams got faster.
We just didn't have the pace and we have to understand why. But we got almost slower during the weekend while the others got faster, Or maybe we were too light or heavy. Who knows.Lewis Hamilton told Sky Sports
Mercedes has continued to attempt their best in the 2024 season to improve positions by the season’s end. Red Bull’s struggle has helped the team in making this goal a possibility. The German carmaker will have to keep up with performances and put their heads into the game for the business end of the campaign.
