Trinidad Chambliss put on a show in the first half against LSU on Saturday night. The senior Ole Miss quarterback completed 21 passes for 248 yards and threw two touchdown passes.

Lane Kiffin walked his Tigers out into a hostile Vaught-Hemingway Stadium in Mississippi, where he made his name as a head coach. The Rebels were out for blood as Kiffin switched allegiance earlier in the offseason.

But it was the Rebels who drew first blood with a field goal. Four minutes later, Chambliss set up Kewan Lacy for a two-yard touchdown.

In the second quarter, the Rebels created distance between themselves and the Tigers after Chambliss connected with Traylon Ray for a 21-yard score. LSU opened their account, but failed to stop Chambliss from finding Deuce Alexander for the Rebels’ third touchdown in the first half.

Trinidad Chambliss proves to be the difference between Ole Miss and LSU in the first half

Chambliss’ first game as a senior Ole Miss quarterback was impeccable. Louisville fought hard from their end. But Chambliss kept his nerve and proved why he’s one of the sought-after signal callers in college football. He had 390+ all-purpose yards and 4 touchdowns to get the Rebels to a winning start.

In Week 2, they blew out a lowly Charlotte team 41-6. Chambliss threw for over 220 yards and 2 touchdowns.

Kiffin angered Ole Miss when he forced a summer move to LSU. In his first game at Baton Rouge, the Tigers scored 51 points against Clemson. The following week, they took on local rivals, Louisiana Tech, who surprisingly caused ample problems for the Tigers’ defense in the first half. Eventually, Kiffin’s team took control and bashed the Bulldogs 45-14.

All that built up to a massive showdown in Mississippi. Kiffin managed Ole Miss from 2020 until last year. He went 55-19 and 3-2 in Bowl games. Once the LSU job opened up, he left, making an enemy out of the Rebels. Offseason drama regarding former NFL players returning to college added more fuel to the fire. NCAA threatened to banish the Tigers from the SEC as punishment.

Then again, it was Kiffin and his crew that discovered Chambliss. The 24-year-old spent four years in D2 football with Ferris State. He won a couple of championships before making the jump not just to D1 but straight to the SEC.

Austin Simmons began the season as the starter, but lackluster performances forced Kiffin to put Chambliss in. He went 11-2, including a 24-19 victory over LSU. Ole Miss qualified for the College Football Playoff. They defeated Georgia in the Sugar Bowl but lost to Miami in the Fiesta Bowl by just one score.

After the season ended, Chambliss applied for an extra year of eligibility. A Mississippi state court judge issued a preliminary injunction against the NCAA, granting Chambliss a sixth year in college football.

Chambliss started 2026 with two wins before dropping 240 yards and two touchdowns against Kiffin’s Tigers in the first half.

LSU’s sporadic comeback ended by Trinidad Chambliss

The third quarter belonged to LSU. Quarterback Sam Leavitt engineered a couple of touchdowns. LSU tied the score early in the fourth quarter with a field goal.

LSU’s comeback lasted minutes. Chambliss scored his first rushing touchdown six minutes from time and converted the two-point try. Ole Miss won 32-24 to go 3-0. Chambliss finished with 33 completions for 363 yards, 3 touchdowns, and 1 interception. Next week, Ole Miss travels to the Swamp to face Florida, while LSU hosts Texas A&M, who lost to Kentucky earlier in the day.
