Dustin Poirier and Michael Chandler at UFC 281
Who would’ve thought Dustin Poirier, who has been through tons of wars inside the octagon was “scared” to fight Michael Chandler at UFC 281?
Dustin Poirier and Michael Chandler built their fight up for quite some time and had some moments of disrespect in the lead-up to UFC 281. There was no doubt that the people’s main event was going to be an absolute blockbuster. Poirier and Chandler delivered the fight they promised. The two went had a “bloody” war for two and a half rounds in the main card leaving the fans speechless.
Poirier after defeating Chandler by submission in the final round went up to his opponent and admitted the disrespect towards him stemmed from a place of fear. “Hey Mike, there’s no disrespect brother. I was scared to fight you. It’s coming from a healthy place,” said Poirier as he dapped up Chandler after the barnburner of a fight.
“The Diamond” then dropped a gem by saying, “Without fear, there is no bravery.” The two also had some ugly moments during the fight as the winner accused Chandler of cheating. However, it is tough to be mad at a fighter after going at each other for nearly 15 minutes inside the octagon.

Dustin Poirier explains why he was “scared” of Michael Chandler
At the UFC 281 post-fight press conference, Poirier was more than happy to explain what he meant by being “scared” of Michael Chandler after the fight. “Those are the kinds of fights that I want to sign. Those contracts that get me nervous, they get me worried,” said Poirier. The Louisiana fighter acknowledged that Chandler is one of the most dangerous fighters on the roster and pushed him to train harder.
Michael Chandler has been nothing short of complete entertainment in all his fights. The former Bellator champion, since his debut with the UFC, has gone on to win a bonus every time but one fight. Only one fight out of his five has gone to decision. His only decision fight comes against Justin Gaethje, which went on to be the Fight of The Year.
Poirier took 11 months off from fighting and fully came into this fight against Chandler knowing it would be a “head-on collision”. Poirier has now successfully passed the test and shown that he’s the better fighter of the two.
