Alexander Volkanovski is the featherweight champion of the world – the safe assumption woule be to assert that he is a great fighter. On top of that, his lively personality is what has won over so many MMA fans.

Despite being called ‘short’ guy by Islam Makhachev, after the latter’s win over Charles Oliveira, Volkanovski took the call out in his stride, entered the octagon and faced-off against one of the scariest men on the UFC roster. As it does, the UFC made hay when the sun shone, and booked the title fight for Perth, at UFC 284.

Posting to his Instagram story, he had uploaded a video that would’ve looked normal, if not given further inspection. Upon closer perusal, and with the help of a handy zoom-in, it looked like Alexander Volkanovsi’s kneecap resembled the face of a man, due to its wrinkling.

Pairing it with a fitting caption, he wrote, “Yo Islam [Makhachev]… Your belt’s got my name on it, and my knee’s got your face on it.” Ever the chirpy human, Volkanovski found humour in between training, in what is bound to be his toughest training camp to date.

Is there anything apart from the lightweight title at stake when Alexander Volkanovski and Islam Makhachev take on each other?

It goes without saying, but UFC 284 will be one of the most highly anticipated match-ups that the UFC has already announced for next year. Its popularity is only trumped, maybe, by the Charles Oliveira-Islam Makhachev fight at UFC 280 in Abu Dhabi.

Alexander Volkanovski had come prepared to Abu Dhabi, to take on either of the lightweight protagonists, if something untoward were to happen and one of them were to pull out. That wasn’t the case, as the two made weight without any problems. However, he didn’t go back empty handed, as Dana White almost guaranteed the Australian a title shot on the spot.

The question to be asked is, whether, apart from the lightweight title, anything else is being contested as well. The answer is a double edged yes – that is, the two shook hands in the octagon to exchange their pound for pound rankings, in the event of the fight turning out in either’s favour. Being undefeated in the UFC, Alexander Volkanovski is #1 on the pound for pound rankings, and his future opponent #2. Although the ranking is just for comparative purposes, expect a change of the guard at the top if Makhachev wins.
