Aljamain Sterling admits giving a wrong take on the referee stoppage during the Rafael Dos Anjos and Rafael Fiziev fight. After failing multiple times to make the fight, Dos Anjos and Fiziev was finally scheduled at UFC on ESPN: dos Anjos vs. Fiziev on July 9th. The fight was extremely entertaining and both fighters were not giving up easily.
After four rounds of continuous back and forth, Fiziev finally caught RDA with a quick right hand and dropped him on the ground. The referee Mark Smith, stopped the fight immediately and Fiziev won the fight via knockout.
However, many fans questioned the stoppage and claimed that the stoppage was premature and it didn’t allow the Brazilian to recover properly. UFC Bantamweight champion, Sterling also had similar opinion on the results and shared his thoughts on twitter. He wrote :
” Marks usually one of the better refs but that stoppage was way too quick. Tough break. Wish we got to see if RDA could recover. Rough ending to a great fight. #UFCVegas58.”
Aljamain Sterling explains why he gave such an opinion on the stoppage
Sterling recently posted an Instagram reel about him talking to the fans about how he made a mistake in recognising the situation.
The fighter agreed that he was wrong and him being an athlete pushed him to see the fighter on the ground getting a chance to recover. Aljo explained that those hits were nasty and dos Anjos had no chance to recover. He said :
” I stand corrected guys. I was getting butchered for my opinion. Mind you, I’m watching live. The athlete always wants to have every opportunity that they can to try to recover to try to get back into the fight. He took a monster shot right on the chin that sat him down and Fiziev followed up with one monster shot that hit his head and bounced it off the canvas. Now it real time when watch that it happens like this, it almost come off as,..woah! What happened? You didn’t let the guy try to turn coz he had his hand up”
It’s normal for fighters to put themselves in the shoes of other fighters who are fighting inside the ring. In the heat of the moment, Sterling gave a wrong opinion but after realising it made sure to accept his mistake.
