In Michael Bisping’s recent episode of Believe You Me podcast, Anthony Smith revealed why he missed weight. Anthony Smith has always criticized fighters for missing weight, but this time found himself on the wrong side of the argument.

Smith was the backup fighter for the light heavyweight title bout in UFC 283. Gladly, his services weren’t needed since both Glover Teixeira and Jamahal Hill made the weight which Hill won with a unanimous decision. Anthony Smith has always made sure to make himself heard when fighters miss weight, unfortunately, this time it was him. “I’ll be the first one on the scale for my next fight. And I’m not a serial weight misser. It happens…wasn’t on purpose”, Smith said.

“It wasn’t for a lack of effort,” Smith said, ” I spent 48 straight hours cutting weight...wasn’t a lack of effort. No one saw me on the scale looking like I had an additional 20 pounds to lose. I got close, but it wasn’t close enough, and it’ll never happen again.” Smith thankfully wasn’t needed otherwise the organization wouldn’t be happy having two fighters miss weight for a title fight.

Anthony Smith seems to have realized what went wrong and promised to “never repeat it”. Well with this fiasco, Smith should know that it is not always possible to make weights and be a little less harsh on other fighters who miss weight.

Anthony Smith was disappointed to know when the UFC 283 was announced. He was scheduled to fight Jamahal Hill on March 2023, but with the UFC 283 announcement of Hill vs Teixeira – he felt left out.

When Jan Blachowicz vs. Magomed Ankalaev at UFC 282 was announced as a split draw, Smith had the chance to get a title shot if it was with Jamahal Hill. But he was left disappointed when Hill vs. Teixeira was announced as the fight. “Uh, yeah that’s a problem. Yeah, that’s a big problem for me. Yeah, I don’t know,” Smith said.

To make sure he isn’t frustrated by the announcement, he was announced as the backup fighter for the title match. He might’ve hoped for one of the fighters to miss weight, but unfortunately, he was the one who missed weight. In the future, surely he will get a title shot to prove himself against the destined fight against Jamahal Hill.
