Islam Makhachev will take on Alexander Volkanovski in the main event of UFC 284 with his UFC lightweight title on the line. The Dagestani champion is the betting favorite in the upcoming bout. In a recent interview, Makhachev’s head coach, Javier Mendez once revealed the discipline and respect culturally instilled within Dagestani fighters.

Javier Mendez has previously trained Khabib Nurmagomedov, the former UFC lightweight champion. In the interview, Mendez explained how as a pupil, Khabib had always respected him. The interviewer asked where the Dagestani boys went to celebrate after fights.

They never celebrate. You’ve got to understand these guys are Muslims through and through. They are the most loyal, respectful fighters I’ve met in my whole life. Khabib has been with me for 10 years. Not once has he ever disrespected me…their culture, and how they are as persons are second to none. The respect they have for the elders,” Mendez explained the kind of respect Dagestani fighters have given him.

Javier Mendez calls UFC 284 main event a ‘very tough fight’

Islam Makhachev’s coach, Javier Mendez appeared on the Submission Radio podcast in Australia to discuss the upcoming super fight. The UFC lightweight title will be on the line as Alexander Volkanovski challenges for the double-champ status.

Mendez is one of the best coaches in the history of MMA. The California-based striking coach has previously trained Khabib Nurmagomedov and led him to the lightweight championship. “It is a very exciting fight. Islam is the most well-rounded fighter on the planet and we will see that happen come Sunday. Khabib calls Alex the most difficult and very tough fight. But I think Islam gets it done,” Javier said.

Islam Makhachev will be entering the octagon on Sunday in his first title defense after becoming champion at UFC 280. Makhachev’s superior grappling and improved striking have taken him to the next level.

UFC featherweight champion, Alexander Volkanovski will be fighting for the lightweight title and to retain his position as the #1 pound-for-pound fighter in the world.
